HUD Budget HUD unveiled their proposed budget for FY 2017 that includes over $11 billion in new mandatory spending as well as over $48 billion in gross discretionary funding. The budget will require Congressional support and will undoubtedly undergo many changes & twists before something is finally approved. Some takeaways: - $20.9 billion for the Housing Choice Voucher program
- $10.8 billion
for the Project-Based Rental Assistance program, which supports 12 months of funding for rental assistance contracts with public and private owners who maintain affordable rental housing for 1.2 million families.
2 new studies on Bedbugs were recently releasedThe first study focused on the genetic effectiveness of the critter's ability to develop resistance to pesticides. The second study focuses on the correlation to ancient Egyptian Bedbugs that were found fossilized.
Class-action lawsuits: While lawsuits fly around normally, this one from Iowa really ups the ante: This case was settle for $2.45 million and it was certified as a class action for the residents.
Indications that
Bedbugs may be a vector for disease. This could actually be a game changer on a global scale as noted by Scientific American Article. Bedbugs have always been a pest, feeding on human blood, but if the testing is verified that are actually vectors for disease, they move from being classified by Health Departments (local, state, & federal) as nuisances, to vermin. The presence of vermin
typically denotes a non-habitable facility for humans. The governmental oversight and impact could be substantial. Including the new rules and regulations on housing providers.
